Answer by ElfwreckBasically: No to part 1, yes to part 2. Mostly.
Ebooks from the Sony store, in format .LRX, cannot be converted to other formats, because nobody's figured out how to remove the DRM on the Sony books, and Sony refuses to allow people to convert them to read on other devices.
