Q&A: How do movie directors review footage from a film camera on the spot?

Question by Stephen: How do movie directors review footage from a film camera on the spot?
I don't know much about developing film but I'm pretty sure film whether it's still or motion needs to be developed first in order to be reviewed. Is this correct? If so, how do movie directors review footage on the spot that was filmed on a film camera? Wouldn't it need to be developed first and isn't that process somewhat lengthy?
